This study is the ninth conducted by the Institute for Public Opinion Research in Bratislava, which served as a department of the Ministry of Information from 1947 to 1950. The study covers a wide range of topics (the black market and gray market prices, women’s entry into the workforce, store opening hours, textile sales, foreign language proficiency, foreign language instruction in schools, radio listening, radio programming, listening to foreign broadcasts, and mutual consideration among people after the war). The SASD provides a reconstruction of the research results, compiled based on final reports submitted to state authorities and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Slovakia (ÚV KSS). Neither the data nor the original questionnaire are available; the SASD provides a reconstruction of the questions used in the questionnaire, and the basic research results are available online in an Excel file. The research was conducted using a purposive sample selection to correspond as closely as possible to the estimated structure of the population of Slovak society at that time. Since this was the postwar period and the last nationwide census was in 1930, with the next one not until 1950, it was not possible to use quota sampling. However, the nature of the sample suggests that the sample selection corresponded in several respects to the structure of Slovak society at the time of the survey, which was closest to the 1950 census.

The survey was designed to capture the diversity of the population in Slovakia in terms of gender, occupation, age, nationality, and religious affiliation.
The survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews by approximately 200 external interviewers from the institute, most of whom worked as educational and cultural workers in Slovakia. The interviewers were trained on the research methodology in writing and through informational brochures. The interviewers received the questionnaires by mail along with instructions on what types of respondents to seek out in their local areas. The completed questionnaires were sent back by mail.
